First time on a plane and first time out of Kenya. They’re finding the heat unbearable. And there’s no where to ride. Zakayo did Mount Faber 12 times. It’s a really, really short climb. He’s here with Isaac to do 3 things.
1. Get himself fitted for a real bike. Until January this year, he was using a single-speed ‘Black Mamba’. It’s this 40 pounder that’s got a single 52-18 gear ratio. He’d climb 15% gradients on that. Seriously strong guy, this Zakayo. In March, I gave him Quentin’s Cannondale, which Quentin generously donated. Now he’s getting an Orbea. Hopefully, we can bring it in at a little heavier than the 6.8kg limit. Just in case some one weighs it.
2. Take yoga classes. This guy is all lungs and legs, but he needs flexibility and breathing exercises. My buddy Shashi has volunteered to conduct the classes. The whole project is sort of going this way: friends helping out. The other day, Peter Mealin sponsored Zakayo’s ticket to Singapore.
3. Climb Genting. Procycling magazine just rated it the fifth hardest climb. And they ride it during the Tour De Langkawi every year. We’ll see if he’s the real thing then.
